The flange face controls sealing performance, bolt loading, and gasket behavior. A raised face suits many process and utility lines because its smaller sealing area concentrates bolt force. It commonly uses spiral-wound or compressed fiber gaskets. Check the pressure-temperature rating, pipe alignment, and surface finish before selection. A raised face is not automatically the best choice.
A flat face works well with full-face gaskets and lower-pressure systems. It can reduce bending stress on cast or less rigid mating flanges. However, uneven bolt tightening may create leakage around the outer edge.
Ring-type joint faces use a machined groove and metal ring gasket. They offer strong sealing for high-pressure, high-temperature service, but require accurate machining and careful installation. Small scratches matter.
Tips: Match both flange faces exactly. Confirm gasket material, groove dimensions, bolt strength, and operating temperature. Clean the sealing surfaces with a lint-free cloth. Never force misaligned piping into position. Use a calibrated torque wrench and tighten bolts in a cross pattern. Recheck the decision when service conditions change. A cheaper face type may create higher maintenance costs. There is no universal answer; field conditions can expose assumptions that looked reasonable on paper.
