During National Women’s Day week, there’s nothing better than Sunshine Women’s Tour professionals joining their Sunshine Tour counterparts on the course and making history as they compete for the same R2 million prize in the inaugural Vodacom Golf Origins event this week. The celebrations took place at Zebra. Village Club.
The popular Sunshine Tour series has a history of breaking new ground in the game since it first launched in 2004, and this week is no exception as it now looks to provide local support by inviting 10 Sunshine Women’s Tour professionals to compete. The professional game offers more. equality with men in the series.
“I’m very excited and it’s great to be able to win a prize like this,” Brittany-Faye Berger said. “We only have six matches on the Women’s Sunshine Tour, so it’s good for us to keep the schedule competitive.
“We all want to race abroad, so the prize money is very high, but it will also be a good test of our game because the track is a bit long. It will be difficult to get into the top 50. I’ll just stay. in my zone “I don’t hit much, but my irons are my strength – I’m pretty accurate,” said the 23-year-old from Mount Edgecombe.
“This is a historic moment for South African golf, and particularly for women’s golf,” added Thandi McCallum.
“The only tournament where women compete against men is the Scandinavian Open. So it definitely raises the bar and it’s really exciting to be a female golfer in South Africa at the moment as our game grows. It’s great to see women’s golf thriving. The number of amateurs turning professional has increased by 12% in the last year and that is because Vodacom has given us wonderful 100% support for the women’s game.”
Nadia van der Westhuizen is another excited Sunshine Women’s Tour golfer looking to make her mark on the men’s game.
“I’m really happy that it’s definitely a new experience for us to play on the same course at the same time as the men’s team, just using different tee boxes. It will be a real test because men’s golf is great too. I’ll try to play the same game, but I know I’ll have to go a little lower than usual and I’m going to hit two more shots on the par heels,” said Vander West, a junior provincial color holder in three other sports, Heusen said. .
Opportunity is clearly making Sunshine Women’s Tour golfers bolder and this has been a truly historic week for South African golf.
